Overview

The Kensington Area includes the west London Boroughs of Hammersmith and Fulham, Hounslow, Kensington and Chelsea, the borough of Richmond north of the Thames, and the Surrey Borough of Spelthorne. Spanning from Knightsbridge to the ancient bridge that crosses the Thames into Staines, the parishes of the Kensington Area serve hugely diverse and dynamic communities.

There is an occupational requirement that the job-holder is a Christian under the Part 1 of Schedule 9 to the Equality Act 2010.

Introduction

The Area Director of Ministry is a senior member of the Kensington Area Team, reporting to the Bishop of Kensington. They will be responsible for providing visionary leadership and ensuring good management in the following areas: fostering vocations to lay and ordained ministries; directing Ordinands; supervising post ordination training; overseeing clergy ministerial review, development and training; facilitating lay training programmes.

Main Responsibilities

Fostering vocations to lay and ordained ministries

  • This entails preaching and leading teaching sessions in churches across the Area and the wider diocese, inspiring a compelling vision for the ministry of every local church, including the value and significance of ordained ministry.

Directing ordinands

  • Not limited to but including leading and supporting a team of Assistant Directors of Ordinands

Supervising post ordination training

  • Such as planning annual services for the ordination of priests in the Area 

Oversee clergy ministerial review, development and training

  • For example organising and facilitating key Area training events (including Clergy Study Days and Area Conferences)

Oversee lay training programmes

  • This would partly comprise communicating clearly to parishes a range of training opportunities within the diocese and beyond

The Ideal Candidate

The person appointed is likely to be an ordained priest within the Church of England. In addition to the required level of ordination, the role holder must have:

  • Strategic thinking
  • Be a good communicator
  • Strong gifts as a theological teacher and ministry trainer
  • Have a high level of organisational skills
  • Have a high level of emotional intelligence
  • The ability to manage pressure well
  • Have a high capacity to make good judgements
  • Possess clear and incisive decision-making skills
  • Demonstrate good conflict management skills
  • Experience in the area of encouraging vocations
  • Significant experience in effective parochial ministry
