Overview

Vicar of St John’s, Belmont

We are looking for an energetic Vicar to develop the real potential for both spiritual and numerical growth at St John’s.

The Parish of Belmont

Belmont parish, with a population of about 6000, sits at the border between the London Borough of Sutton and Surrey. It enjoys the best of both worlds with easy rail access to London and proximity to attractive Surrey countryside. Although suburban, Belmont has the ambience of a village, with St John’s a key feature. Sutton schools are sought-after. Belmont has a large primary school, a new secondary school and also an independent primary, just outside the parish.

The Anglican/Methodist Local Ecumenical Partnership

Since the mid 1980s, the union between local Anglicans and Methodists has happily developed to the present position whereby constitutionally both have merged to become a “Church of England & Methodist Church”. After closure of the Methodist Church, worship is in St John’s with a single congregation committed to sharing the best of both traditions. Governance is by an ECC (Ecumenical Church Council) covering finance, organisation, management and decision taking.

Introduction

Summary of our Mission Action Plan (MAP)

Our new MAP is supported by the congregation and sets out the needs and expectations of the parish for the future, as well as demonstrating that our church is committed to and working towards developing and growing our parish.

It includes a detailed consideration of our strengths and weaknesses as well as the many opportunities available to us.

Our Vision for the future is to become a vibrant Church, with a growing, friendly, mixed-age congregation, sharing our faith with the local community in practical ways. Ways in which we are actively working to achieve this are:

  • Offering church services and activities to attract and engage young families and young people.
  • Starting a children’s choir and using their other musical skills within worship.
  • Building our links with the community, schools and youth groups.
  • Improving our communications, including building our social media presence and developing a new website.
  • Improving our financial position through stewardship, fund raising, grant applications and increasing income from use of our buildings.

The Ideal Candidate

What we are looking for in our new Vicar

St John’s has an ageing congregation with the need to introduce younger families as church members. There is good scope to do so. However, this is so important and crucial to the future well-being and growth of the parish that the new Vicar must expect to spend 40-50% of his/her time on this work.

As well as welcoming applications from experienced clergy, consideration will be given to those for whom this will be a first or second appointment after the end of Curacy. We would welcome applications from either male or female clergy.

We are looking for a leader with the energy, drive and enthusiasm to:

  • Develop the considerable outreach potential in the local community for growth of young families as church members.
  • In conjunction with the ECC support, help implement and further develop our MAP.
  • Lead a fresh expression of church for those in our local community with little or no experience or knowledge of the Christian faith.
  • Convey Christ’s message in a straightforward meaningful way and share your personal experiences to help us in our own Christian journey.
  • Embrace our Anglican/Methodist partnership by participating in Sutton Methodist Circuit staff events and leadership team meetings.
  • Be a good communicator and outgoing with a sense of humour and enthusiasm.
  • Not be shy to introduce new ideas and embrace the challenges that our changing society brings while preserving traditional values.
