Cathedral Constable

Overview

An opportunity has arisen for two Constable posts for Liverpool Cathedral.  You will report directly to the Head Constable and work within the Constable team to provide a first class 24 hour security service for the Cathedral and its surrounding buildings.  You will encounter many people who visit, worship, volunteer and work at the Cathedral and you will be expected to be a great ambassador.

Shift rota includes day/night and weekend work based on -

2 day shifts,
2 night shifts
followed by 4 days not on duty.

Introduction

Liverpool Cathedral are looking to recruit two Cathedral Constables to join their existing team.

As role holder you will work collaboratively with the Head Constable and colleagues in order to provide an excellent welcome and security function for the Cathedral and surrounding properties that include: 27 properties within Lady Chapel and Cathedral Close; adjacent student accommodation at Dillistone and Patey Courts; St. James’ House and remote interface with visitors to private accommodation at Arch View Crescent.   

As a member of the Constables team you are required to ensure that the department achieves its  organisational objectives relating to service standards for security across the precinct, planned income levels in the car park and provision of effective support to other departments across the cathedral to ensure that the whole organisation benefits from the departments work.

As an Attested Constable you will have additional responsibilities in areas including; conflict management, incident response, evidence and crime scene management, arrest and detention, offences against property, people, and public order, and PACE (The Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984). 

Main Responsibilities

• Working in partnership with the cathedral community, liaising with various departments and individuals ensuring services and special events are carried out in a peaceful environment free from public disruption.
• To be the first point of encounter and welcome for the many visitors to the Cathedral providing a level of polite and helpful customer service to all so that the organisation is recognised because of it.
• Ensure that all customer complaints directed at the service you provide are handled in a professional, calm and courteous manner. 
• Provide a visible presence to deter crime and reassure the cathedral community
• Conduct a minimum of four daily foot patrols per shift of the Cathedral, properties and grounds, dealing effectively with any incidents that arise.     
• Respond to calls and requests to assist at incidents.
• Diffuse potentially volatile situations with due regard for the safety of all involved
• Deal sensitively with bereaved and distressed members of the public or those seeking refuge.
• To discourage unwelcome visitors and if necessary escort them from the Cathedral and grounds.

• To effectively carry out all duties required of you in the Constables Lodge including:
• Monitoring CCTV equipment for the Cathedral and Archview Crescent
• Dealing professionally and politely with customer telephone enquiries
• Operating the Cathedral alarm system
• Ensuring all visitors are signed in
• Maximising income from the Cathedral car park
• Raising the traffic barrier when requested
• Recording and dealing with lost or found property

Attestation responsibilities include:

• Submitting internal crime reports and criminal intelligence reports.
• Gathering, recording and analysing intelligence to achieve community safety and crime reduction objectives providing crime prevention advice where needed.
• Developing community knowledge to identify individuals and locations at risk of being involved in crime.
• Conducting arrests with respect for the human rights, security and health and safety of detained individuals, members of the public, colleagues and self.
• Recording statements and completing incident note books for presentation to Merseyside Police.
• Enforcing road traffic procedures and issuing fixed penalties for relevant offences;

General responsibilities include:

• Take direction on specific duties from senior colleagues both within the constable’s team and the wider cathedral community. 
• To act as key holder for all the premises within the Cathedral.
• To open the Cathedral each morning turning off alarms; turning on lighting and opening gates and doors in all public access areas.
• Within in the Cathedral car park you will ensure that:

• Pay and Display equipment remains fully operational at all times
• That all traffic entering Cathedral grounds is monitored
• The car park barrier is controlled only allowing staff, deliveries, permits and people on Cathedral business free admittance.
• To supervise and assist the movement of cash and other valuables in and around the Cathedral.  
• To be First Aid trained and to attend refresher training as required so that you are qualified to administer appropriate first aid according to the situation.
• To assist in emergency evacuation of the Cathedral if required.
• To undertake any Safeguarding training which may be required.

The post holder will undertake other relevant duties and training as may be requested from time to time and commensurate with the role.

English and Maths at grade C/Level 3 or above
