Overview

Welcome to the Benefice of Stamford Bridge Group of Parishes, three churches within two parishes situated in the beautiful Vale of York on the edge of the rolling hills of the Yorkshire Wolds, with good transport links to York and the East Coast.

Originally a Roman stronghold on the river Derwent, Stamford Bridge is famous as the site of the 1066 battle between the Saxons and Vikings. Today it is a large busy village with a good range of amenities and continued housing development. The outlying villages of Catton, Scrayingham and Leppington are pretty, rural villages originally of local farming families.

The church communities are very welcoming and across the benefice offer a variety of services. St Peter & St Paul, Scrayingham was threatened with closure 4 years ago and due to strong resistance has established a monthly and well attended festival service calendar. It seeks the enthusiasm to support church life from a wider network. The church communities of Stamford Bridge and Catton has established groups and activities which are well attended, including thriving children and youth groups and good links to the community and schools. The Ministry Team are supported by several RPAs trained in various areas of ministry and an enthusiastic team who support all aspects of church life. Being involved in the York Diocese LYCiG initiative has enabled us to identify our strengths and weaknesses and we are working to grow together as a church and individuals through re-introducing and exploring ideas to reach out to the changing dynamic of our villages and deepen our faith.

Main Responsibilities

Main responsibilities:

• To promote the Diocesan Vision of Generous Churches Making and Nurturing Disciples, prayerfully working to deepen the five marks of growth in the parishes of the benefice.

• To be someone who will lead us in growing together as a church and individually.

• To enable us to reach out more to our wider community, being aware of the changing dynamics of our villages and new housing developments.

• To help us to make our worship the best it can be by broadening our appeal to those on the fringes.

• To widen our engagement with young people, young adults and young families

• To be a visionary, creative and motivating leader who will help us ensure a healthy and sustainable future for all the congregations and churches in the benefice.

• To deepen our commitment to Fair Trade and to embrace its wider aspects.

The Ideal Candidate

We seek a Priest who will help us grow in:

• Christlikeness through deepening and enriching our worship, prayer and discipleship.

• Commitment to market towns and rural mission as we seek to reach those we currently don’t across our parishes and Deanery

• Partnership in mission with our neighbouring parishes, the Deanery, local schools, ecumenical friends and the Fair Trade movement.

• Influence as a visible presence able to share the Gospel in a way engaging to those who live in these parishes.

• Numbers particularly among under 18s, young adults, people in poverty and those seeking faith.
