Introduction

St Michael’s Huyton

Vicar

Overview

We are looking for a priest of our growing church who will love us and pray for us and support us on our journey. Someone who will be a collaborative leader and will lead by example. Someone who will engage with and increase outreach in the community and who will help all ages to grow in faith.

There has been a church on the site of St Michael’s since Anglo-Saxon times and the current building dates primarily from 14th century. It is in the heart of Huyton village and has played an important part in its history. There are exciting plans for the regeneration of the village centre include naming a village green after the church and planning to place the church at the centre of the community. The project includes the building of new homes and the growth of local businesses to provide job opportunities in the area.

There are a number of primary schools and a large secondary school in the parish but we value our relationship with Huyton with Roby Infant CE primary school most highly.

Our church has a gifted ministry team which includes 2 readers, an all-age worship group, a strong support of church wardens and assistant church wardens, a maintenance team and administrative support for preparation of services on PowerPoint, an organist and music group.  St Michael’s is part of Huyton deanery known for its collaborative and supportive chapter, with key projects being the deanery academy where training and discipleship opportunities are offered in partnership with parishes and schools (for more information visit www.huytondeanery.org). The Deanery Leadership Team is focussed and effective in supporting and co-ordinating mission across the deanery,

The vicarage designated for this post is next door to St George’s Huyton about 1 mile away as the current vicarage is considered to be unsuitable

Huyton has good transport links, with a number of motorways linking to the north-west and around the country. It also has a train station (5 minutes from the church) that links to Liverpool, and Manchester. Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park is within the parish and offers a fully equipped Gym, swimming pools, Spa and a cycle track. Huyton also has 2 golf courses, numerous parks and Stadt Moers Country Park. Knowsley Safari Park and Shakespeare North Playhouse are nearby.

We are an open congregation who are receptive to change and willing to support new ideas and we will pray for you and support you as an individual and as a vicar.

Closing Date: 4th October

Being part of the Clergy Team in Liverpool Diocese

For many years we have been working to achieve growth in our diocese. We have used different ways to express this but the aim and direction of travel has remained the same – consistent with the whole of the Church of England. We have articulated a vision for this growth by saying

we are asking God for a bigger church so that we can make a bigger difference:

more people knowing Jesus and more justice in the world.

In our diocesan vision we have identified four priority areas for our work in mission in this season:

Introducing people to God through Jesus Christ

Deepening discipleship, especially by means of our Rule of Life

Developing Christian leaders in every place

Working for justice

Like everyone entering a new role in the Diocese, you will accept the priority of these areas, and will measure your ministry by effectiveness in these areas. You will be supported and expected to be accountable (through the Ministerial Development Review as well as through regular meetings with your colleagues) for how they are being implemented within your area of responsibility.

In common with all clergy in the diocese, you will work together with others to:-

  1. Establish a culture of invitation in evangelism within the local church.
  2. Start new worshipping communities and maintain existing healthy worshipping communities that are accessible to all.
  3. Establish a culture in the local church of expecting a deepening of discipleship and putting into practice the 6 disciplines of the Rule of Life.
  4. Develop prayerfully a strategy for mission and church growth and aligning it with the Diocesan strategy Fit for Mission.
  5. Identify, train, release and support new Christian leaders and teams.
  6. Encourage vocations by identifying the gifts of others and assisting people to seek God’s calling for their lives.
