St Paul’s draws together a very diverse set of activities, projections and aspirations.  It is the Cathedral of the Diocese of London and the seat of its Bishop, a national church and an international spiritual focus, a space for worship and holiness, a place of debate and challenge, an icon of resilience in the face of adversity, an architectural heritage centre, a partner in the City of London, and a commercial enterprise.  In addition to holding four services every day (five on Sundays), St Paul’s is open for sight-seeing six days a week, and last year welcomed over 800,000 paying visitors.

Post Introduction

The focus of this new role is to support our growing music outreach work, by recruiting young people at risk of social exclusion who live in Hackney, and who love music. The Community Development Worker will get to know families and young people and will be outward-facing. A key strategy is to work with local organisations for those on the margins, to gain referrals to a new Senior Choir for the borough—Hackney Choral. The post-holder will be based at St Paul’s Church, West Hackney, and be employed by St Paul’s Cathedral. The Precentor is the Chapter member with responsibility for this area of work.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Build strong public relationships with young people in the local area, modelled on excellent citizenship, musical participation, and personal aspiration.
  2. Meet with local families and get to know them, including those who are already part of the Hackney Children’s Choir. 
  3. Meet with head teachers and key leaders of 10 local (predetermined) schools to strengthen partnerships, along with the OBE Organ Outreach Fellow & Rector of West Hackney.
  4. Across these groups, conduct approximately three 45-minute one-to-one conversations with partners/participants each week.

Recruiting Young People

  1. Work with the Hackney Choral team to recruit 45 12-18 year olds from schools, community groups, the Hackney Children’s Choir, and the local area to participate in:
  • a weekly Senior Choir, meeting at St Paul’s West Hackney on a Tuesday evening.
  • termly holiday courses, open to those across the borough.
  1. Manage referrals from local schools, local services, and other organisations.

Supporting the Senior Choir & Choral Courses

  1. Attend weekly rehearsals during term time for 12-18 year olds on a Tuesday afternoon for 45 young people.
  2. Assist in the delivery of the Hackney Choral Courses in Easter (2 days), summer (4 days) and at Christmas (1 day).
  3. Work with the OBE Organ Outreach Fellow to plan concerts, activities and enrichment trips, and attend these as agreed within allocated time.
  4. Support the work of the Hackney Choral Team.


  1. Keep accurate records of meetings and discussions, using a recognised methodology.
  2. Work with the Outreach Administrator based in the Music Department to capture participant data in line with GDPR.
  3. Attend a termly steering group meeting, and meet on a regular basis with the Rector of West Hackney and the OBE Organ Outreach Fellow.
  4. Work with an external evaluator and colleagues to report on progress each quarter, and at the end of the year.

The Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone with the following skills:


  • Experience as a youth worker
  • Gifted communicator able to work among diverse groups
  • Passion for inner-city London and its people
  • High degree of empathy
  • Ability to work autonomously and with flexibility
  • Familiar with best safeguarding practice
  • Experience of administration and record-keeping
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Able to thrive in a close-knit team


  • Knowledge of classical/choral music
  • Track record of working in schools/local authority
  • Qualification in Community Development or similar
