Overview

Re-advertising: Full-time, modern catholic Society priest needed for parish within Erith Deanery (London Borough of Bexley).  Under the extended episcopal care of the Bishop of Richborough.

Introduction

St Augustine's has a modern catholic tradition, using the modern rite and incense every Sunday and with regular weekday masses.  There is an informal mission partnership with The Annunciation Chislehurst, St George’s Bickley and St Mary’s Swanley to co-operate in mission, under the extended episcopal care of the Bishop of Richborough.

Main Responsibilities

We are looking for a strong and spiritual leader, committed to celebrating Mass each day.  Our new parish priest must have an interest in work with schools and be prepared to play a full part as Governor of the Church Primary School.

Please see the accompanying Parish Profile for full details of our hopes and aspirations for our new incumbent.

The Ideal Candidate

Essential Qualities

  • A Society priest within the Catholic tradition of the Church of England who will conduct liturgy with dignity using the modern rite and provide inspiring spiritual leadership
  • Committed to regularly celebrating mass during the week
  • Excellent people/pastoral skills. He should be caring, compassionate, approachable and sociable and instil enthusiasm into the congregation
  • An excellent communicator and listener with all age groups
  • A strong leader with diplomatic skills
  • A priest who is adaptable and forward thinking
  • To reach out and be a visible presence in the local community
  • To be prepared to encourage and strengthen our children and youth work, and take an active role within our Church School as a governor and to build on the excellent relationship between church and school.

About us

We are very proud of our church, which sits by the main road and is very visible.  It was built in 1916 and the nave is a flexible space which can be used for special and social events.

Our congregation is a diverse multi-cultural mix: around half our ER live outside the parish, and some members of the congregation have worshipped with us for more than 30 years. We have a number of young families, and these are increasing.

The Church Hall is a wonderful resource and is used by the pre-school, local uniformed groups, and other community organisations.  The Vicarage is a large, detached 4-bedroom property.

You will be supported by an active PCC.  We have sufficient financial reserves to support our work and ministry, and a health balance in the Church Repair Fund.
