Introduction

Are you passionate about ministry in a diverse, dynamic academic environment? Do you have a heart for young adults and a calling to serve across boundaries of faith, belief, and background?

We are seeking a University Chaplain to serve as the coordinating Christian Chaplain on the Medway Campus, supporting students and staff from all faiths and none across the three universities based there. This unique and rewarding role is supported by the Diocese of Rochester and accountable to the Medway Campus Chaplaincy Board.

About the Role

As Chaplain, you will be a visible and accessible presence on campus—offering pastoral care, spiritual guidance, and creative leadership in developing community life, worship, and interfaith dialogue.

Your key responsibilities will include:

  • Providing confidential pastoral care to students and staff
  • Leading and supporting Christian worship and discipleship on campus
  • Collaborating with student faith societies and Student Services
  • Overseeing the Multi-Faith Facility and fostering interfaith engagement
  • Acting as chaplain to the entire university community, offering insight on ethics, belief, justice, and wellbeing
  • Participating in university ceremonies, emergency response, and governance committees
  • Building relationships with local churches and faith communities
  • Working closely with other university chaplains to ensure coordinated chaplaincy provision

You’ll be part of a wider network of support within the Diocese and encouraged to bring creativity, compassion, and theological insight into a rich and varied chaplaincy ministry.

About You

We’re looking for someone who is:

  • Lay or ordained, with experience of ministering among students and young adults
  • Pastoral, approachable, and able to build trust
  • Comfortable navigating a multi-faith environment
  • Theologically literate with the ability to navigate varied faiths and traditions
  • Skilled in working independently and collaboratively
  • Experienced in leading worship and managing volunteers
  • Willing to work flexibly, including evenings and weekends

Desirable: Understanding of higher education chaplaincy or Church of England structures.

Please note that there is no housing provision with this post.  Please contact us using the email address below if you wish to have an informal conversation about your circumstances and remuneration.

What we can offer:

  • Flexible working, hybrid working and TOIL
  • Generous holiday entitlement
  • Contributory pension scheme
  • Access to an Employee Assistance Programme and counselling service

The Diocese is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults. All post holders and volunteers are expected to share this commitment.

The wider a group’s diversity, the smarter, wiser, and more compassionate and creative its decision making becomes.

We are committed to achieving diversity throughout our Diocese by seeking UKME/GMH colleagues and those from a wide-range of backgrounds, to help us create a culture of inclusion and belonging.

If you have any questions about the role or application process, please contact the HR department at recruitment@rochester.anglican.org
